Scarce AZ Education Funding Spent on Anti-Abortion Message

Educational funding is currently scarce in Arizona and even as the state ranks near the bottom in both spending and performance, money is being spent to place anti-abortion stickers on the back covers of biology textbooks.

To stress the point, the students were instructed to place these stickers on the textbooks themselves.

It all started when Arizona passed a law that states: "In view of the state's strong interest in promoting childbirth and adoption over elective abortion, no school district or charter school in this state may allow any presentation during instructional time or furnish any materials to pupils as part of any instruction that does not give preference, encouragement and support to childbirth and adoption as preferred options to elective abortion."

(Notice that there is no mention of PREVENTING pregnancies in this law; just "childbirth and adoption.")

It was the passage of this law that lead to the stickers.

Superintendent Dr. Christina M. Kishimoto was quoted in Cosmopolitan as saying: "the stickers on the back cover are the best course of action. We are pleased with the collaboration and completion of this matter."

Here's a pic of the controversial sticker:

A Huffington Post article by Cavan Sieczkowski reported on some of the shock expressed by parents:

"I don't care what your religion is or if you think abstinence education works, that sticker crosses the line for public school," Suzanne Young tweeted.
